Comforts and Joys

THIS YEAR IT SEEMS we have so much to be grateful for—the opening of Market by Jean-Georges at the W Boston, for one—but especially the many people who worked with us in putting together this issue, like the Boston Bruins’ Andrew Ference and Cam Neely, designers Jim Gauthier and Susan Stacy, the Boston Ballet and The Langham Hotel and Boston Harbor Hotel, who helped us put together a few special stocking stuffers exclusive to Boston Common (see page 96). While we highlight some truly beautiful gifts for your loved ones, we’re also thankful for the less visible kind of giving: Philanthropy at the city’s many fundraisers and galas has not waned, even in tough economic times—a gentle reminder of the generosity of this city we love.

Holidays in Boston lend a layer of sparkle to the streets, but every year I crave a snowy escape. One of joys of this city is how easy it is to get to the mountains. This year three resorts top my list, notable for both slopes and spas (the best après-ski treat I know): Stowe Mountain Lodge, where you can practically step out of your bindings and into the hot tub; Mount Washington Resort, with its proximity to Bretton Woods and treetop zipline (even in winter!), and its incredible new spa and outdoor heated pool; and Vermont’s Twin Farms resort, with its private deluxe cottages, unbelievable wine cellar and Japanese furo, where you can soak and steam and still see the stars. I hope for many similar comforts and joys for all of you as we toast the new decade ahead.

What (and who) I’m loving right now

Racy, girly lingerie from Agent Provocateur

Cynthia Rowley’s rocker-chic studded tights

The snacks (and fireplaces) at Post 390, the Back Bay’s hottest new resto

Dark chocolate Purist bars from Hotel Chocolat on Newbury Street

The hidden shelving behind SieMatic’s Beaux Arts sliding marble backsplash

My trainer, Mike D’Angelo, at Revolution Fitness (to work off that chocolate and the ribs at Post!)
